Today’s guest is Jessica Kolowitz aka The Green Dietitian – a dietitian who happens to be vegan! In a world where many medical professionals and dieticians can be rather scathing about following a vegan diet, Jessica is a breath of fresh air and a fountain of knowledge.
Since she opened her practice in Cape Town, she has helped dozens of people to successfully transform their health and improve their quality of life. She also focuses on helping athletes, children, pregnant women and lactating women to achieve optimal health, well-being and performance while following vegan or vegetarian diets. Jessica graduated with her Masters degree in Nutrition in 2017 and aims to use her skills as a researcher to further evaluate the scientific literature and spread the message of a plant-based diet.
Jessica knows her stuff and I just loved chatting to her! She studies the research and her no-nonsense and honest approach to following a vegan diet is one that is much-needed. In this episode we chat about ethical veganism vs plant-based, the close relationship that veganism can have with disordered eating, weight loss and gain on a vegan diet, the need for a representation of ALL body types in the media, the issue of BMI as a health measure, the recent spate of YouTubers suffering from SIBO and what that means for the vegan community, raising vegan children and Jessica’s vision for a vegan future.
*If conversations around disordered eating, diets and Veganism make you uncomfortable, or trigger you in any way, then please tune out now.*
If you’re still here, then get yourself a cup of tea and settle in for this one – it’s a goodie!

Wow, I enjoyed every second of this podcast, thank you!
I’ve been following the greendietitian for a while now (and now I also learnt about you and can follow you too – wow! Bonus!)
I’m a dietitian from South Africa and my biggest passion in this field is vegan & vegetarian (even though it is barely included in our studies – it’s much more community and medically based). I’ve finished my studies and finished my community service year in SA earlier this year.
I aspire to be be a vegan dietitian or something of the sort in this world, and this podcast episode thought me a lot and fired my passion again.
So again – thank you. Both of you are just lovely and excellent.
Awesome podcast, been a vegan for 3.5 years and can relate to everything you said. So good to hear how much the movement is growing… thank you
